At 0900 hours on the 6 November 2014, The
Alexander Wang for H&M collaboration went live and the collaboration
illustrated high fashion for men and women with modern, sport-influenced
clothing and accessories. If you paid attention at fashion week, you’d know
that SPORTS LUXE is on steroids right now and this Alexander Wang X HM
collaboration doesn’t disappoint on that front.
Why did H&M choose
Alexander Wang?
According to H&M’s creative advisor,
Margareta van den Bosch, “We chose Alexander because we had never made a sport
collection and I think he really brought sport into fashion. He’s a great
designer, and someone that I’ve been looking at for a while actually, and he is
the first American that we have collaborated with.”
What does Alexander Wang have
to say about this Collaboration?
Wang described the performance and sportswear
inspired range in these five words: ‘Urban, unprecious, technical, accessible,
fun’ and when on to say that his favourite pieces were the foam-injected knits.
When asked if he found it challenging designing
for a British audience, he simply replied- “Style is global. My own brand is
stocked globally, and it is clear there’s an audience that wants to dress this
way around the world”.
What do I make of the
collection?
As aforementioned, the collection is heavily
influenced by the SPORTS LUXE trend. If this isn’t your forte, then this
collection isn’t for you. However, the best thing about fashion is finding
unorthodox ways to merchandise an item. The collection is also very
homochromatic; it only uses shades of black, white and gray, which I absolutely
love because it gives the collection a classic edge. Finally, if you didn’t
know about Alexander Wang before, you certainly will after seeing this
collaboration. The branding is on steroids! There is a “AW or WANG’ to be seen
on a majority of items carried in the collection and whilst it isn’t
necessarily a bad thing, wearing a few of these pieces simultaneously might get
you mistaken for a billboard.
THE COLLECTION
If you haven’t seen the ads or haven’t had a
chance to see the collection, below are the featured pieces.
What did I get?
Initially, I knew I was only going to get one
item from the whole collection as it was the only piece that worked with my
personal style but as the hours grew, I added one more piece to my list. As
fate would have it, the website crashed before the collection launched and all I
managed to get was my original item. (Unfortunately, the other was sold out!)
As for the actual item, you will have to wait
for the unveil when I do a OOTD/OOTN post.
I hope you have enjoyed reading this post as much as I've enjoyed writing it. Let me
know what your favourite pieces are and I’ll catch y’all in my next post.
Love Always,
Destini XO
